The Lady and the Reaper - shortfilm
I'm very glad to announce you that Kandor Moon's latest production has finally been released on Internet. The film is available at http://www.theladyandthereaper.com/ and it's on Full HD for serious viewers joy. It is also possible to see it in many Festivals and Screenings in 35mm, see above web link for more info.
This project was concieved from its beginning as a research project for the studio. We wanted to try many things and new technology for our future releases. Among them we deeply redesigned the pipeline, made a new animation system, increased resolution of render, migrated to other render engine and, most important, we decided to go stereoscopic 3D.
This last issue meant a lot of changes and challenged our minds to address the latest techniques to achieve a stereo output from the studio.
Just to focus on the Postproduction process, digital composition of the images doubled his work, not just generating left and right views but also, checking syncs between cameras in every single layer. Besides, we also decided go 16b in our outout material, no color clamping to 8b was going to be made anymore, at any stage during the complex process.
This meant having a real offline for editing while keeping a full res repository for shots for an eventual delivery to our mastering vendor Evasion Digital. This way, edting went a step further, getting rid of master quality heavy shots and able to concentrate in the creative area of narrative and pacing the rythm of film.
Once everything was perfectly cut and ready for going online, real mastering was made outsource in Evasion Digital, where both celuloid and digital master were generated. The digital master was another big objective that we wanted to achive. With this version we could easily go to a stereo 3D master, by embedding the two 2K digital streams in a Dolby comliance Master ready to be projected in any commercial show with stereo goggles.
Besides this very new kind of product, we obtained a digital master at full res and 16b color depth, able to be the source of Bluray, DVD and derivated masters to be delivered in the future.
The right use of many technologies and complex data wrangling allowed us to achieve a great leap in quality, compared with our prevoius release The Missing Lynx. Kandor Graphics, the animation studio within Kandor Moon, now is able to do further steps into excellence and quality in film industry.
The coming age of the exploitation of stereo 3D along the improvement of many technical features such as Cloth, Hair, Rig, Render, 3D tools and many more... looks very exciting and... challenging.
I really really hope everyone enjoy the short as we did making it.
